The author of the book is a French warrior, engineer, mathematician and cartographer who served French and Polish kings in the XVIIth century. The book contains an overall characteristic of economy, everyday life and customs of the Ukrainian people, the Cossacks, Cossack movements, relations of the Ukrainians with the Russian, Tatar, and Polish people. Beauplan described Ukraine as an independent political and cultural phenomenon in the heat of the liberation war under command of Bogdan Khmelnitsky.
