The novel "Depech Mode" by Sergey Zhadan is a complicated story about the period of entering a serious life. The action takes place in June, 1993. Three friends have to find quickly their fourth friend who strangely disappeared to inform him of his step-father's death. The genre of the novel is hard to define as too different motives are traced through it. One can at a time call it a lyrical text, a terrorist's practical manual, a religious novel. "Depech Mode" only at first sight seems to be hallucinations of a half-starved student. The novel is actually a collective portrait of the transitional generation stuck in the hard 90s.
