The new book by the well-known historian Andrei Vasilchenko presents the first detailed description in Russian literature of one of the most continuous and bloodiest battles of the Great Patriotic War, which took place in 1942 at a small front sector near an old Russian town of Demyansk. In the course of a cruel struggle at the cost of numerous losses the Russian troops almost totally destructed the 16th German army and the 1st elite SS division “The Dead Head”. However, the Demyansk pocket was not liquidated: German army was provided with weapons by aircrafts and managed to evacuate the rest of their troops out of Demyansk.
