The social-critical novel Democrats (1934 - 1938) is the most extensive prose by the writer, poet and translator Janek Jesensky. In the story of an unequal love affair between a young district official, Dr. Landik, and cook Hanka, the author depicts social relations and the political situation in a small Slovak town in the 1930s. The astonishingly current epic-satirical analysis of parliamentary democracy by its principal advocate is one of the strongest works of Slovak literature.
