The book was written by Stefan Toshev (1859-1924), a Bulgarian infantry general and World War I hero. He says in the foreword: "The Bulgarians, who went through three bloody wars in seven years and deserve credit for some glorious moments in history, don't need empty praise; rather, we need lessons, we need truthful and unbiased description of the events, with all the mistakes and weaknesses that were exhibited. The years 1913 and 1918 saw crushing defeats befalling our enemies but at the same time they involved hard days of failure and collapse for us, the horrors of which can teach lessons to our young people and to posterity."
