May 1918. A messenger from Hetman Pavlo Skoropadskyi comes to retired police captain Klym Zhehrai, who is hiding from bandits, with a proposal to come to His Excellency. At a secret meeting the famous investigator is instructed to investigate three crimes in the county town of Radomysl. German soldiers disappear in the garrison there, and thieves hide part of the state's gold reserves in the surrounding forests.
