The XVIIth century in Russia century was marked by a transition from medieval culture to culture of New Time. The epoch was characterized by appearance and development of a number of new traits in social life, culture and art. That is why, first and foremost, the monograph studies the opposition “old-new”. The use of west-European experience of transition to the new makes the opposition “friend-or-foe” (Russian-foreign) quite topical. A thorough analysis of the categories “popular-elitist” and “sacral-profane” enables to trace the origin, spread and development of innovations in culture of different social classes in the XVIIth century. The author studies the renewal of Russia’s spiritual life and numerous connections of the new culture with old traditions. The specific character of the epoch viewed as a closed structural link is heavily emphasized here as well.
