The crown jewels are among the most important symbols of the state, and we still worship and admire them today. Their history dates back to prehistoric times and antiquity, when they gradually transformed from simple symbols of the power of tribal leaders into a sophisticated series of "regalia" with a precisely defined meaning. The royal or imperial crown was first supplemented by a scepter in ancient Egypt and Rome, and in the Middle Ages by an imperial orb, a state sword, a coronation cross or a robe. This book provides an overview of the history of more than three dozen crown jewels and their countries, and introduces the fates of the monarchs who were most involved in them. It also provides information about their artistic representation or the course of coronations and the main royal residences.
