Valer Mikula is a prominent figure in Slovak literary criticism with an unmistakable style. His critics have always enjoyed the reader's attention, several of them have also provoked controversy and have generally contributed to the value reconfiguration of Slovak literature. The first volume of the Selection from Texts captures the half-century range of his literary-critical activities (1969 2019). The author also included several previously unpublished texts in this selection. A selection of Valer Mikula's texts, published on the occasion of his 70th birthday, is divided into three volumes: 1. Critiques, 2. Studies and essays, 3. Interviews. Literary criticism should, above all, value-oriented the reader of literature and do so in an appropriate way: in newspapers in an accessible and easy style, in professional journals also in professional language or preferably in an essay. And the reader of dailies and weeklies should be subtly reminded that literary-artistic values ??are also social values. For me personally, literary criticism is (and always has been) a kind of intellectual pastime: a provocation of a thoughtless tradition, fast-paced conventions and manipulative consensual opinions. (Valer Mikula).
