The first translation into Russian of a novel by a French-speaking writer of Russian origin. The book, written during the Second World War, tells the story of the fall of France in 1940 under the onslaught of German Nazism and internal collaboration, which led to the consolidation of anti-fascist forces and the formation of the Resistance movement. Victor Lvovich Kibalchich, better known under the pseudonym Victor Serge (1890-1947) was a Russian and French-speaking writer, revolutionary, journalist, poet, activist of the Communist Party and the Comintern, member of the Left Opposition. After arrest and exile in 1933, he left the USSR in 1936 and wrote works of art and memoirs abroad on topics related to the revolution and Stalinism. In the West, where his works are still republished and are noted as an outstanding artist; In the USSR, translations of his works appeared only during the perestroika period.
