Art Pairs: Simion Zamsha/Elena Karacentseva / project, concept, and photographs: Mihai Potarniche; text: Constantin I. Ciobanu [et al.]; graphic design: Simion Zamsha. Simion Zamsha and Elena Karacentseva were among the first to promote contemporary art in higher art education institutions, but even along this path, they had to face provincial ignorance and conservatism. However, their teaching activities led to the diversification of the contemporary conceptual and stylistic spectrum of fine art in the Republic of Moldova. Thanks to the persistence and tenacity of these artist-teachers, such disciplines as object art, children's book illustration, contemporary authorial graphic techniques, handmade paper, and object books emerged and continue to exist in educational programs. As artists, Simion Zamsha and Elena Karachentseva have traversed several stylistic periods—from realism to abstractionism, from symbolism to symbolic realism, and even impressionism. Book illustration and graphic design are integral parts of their work. Both artists have left their mark on numismatic design, heraldry, national philately, and book design.
