The book is dedicated to one of the first wars of the newly formed Soviet state, during which the reestablished Polish Republic sought to seize territories along the Dnieper River. It explores the involvement of Russian Cossacks, many of whom had previously fought for the White Army during the Civil War but now, in a surge of patriotism, went to war against the Poles. The book also discusses the few Cossack units that sided with the Poles and examines how Ukrainians who identified themselves as Cossacks fought both for and against Poland, joining the ranks of the Red Army.
