Alexey Stepanovich Karandashev (1810-1885) was born in the family of a Cossack of the Yakut city regiment. On August 24, 1854, he distinguished himself during a battle with the enemy. Wounded, he scattered a detachment of Anglo-French forces preparing to attack the city with a cannon shot of grapeshot. For this feat, Governor V. S. Zavoiko awarded commander of fifty men the insignia of the military order of St. George on March 5, 1855.
