Local historian Arkady Podlipsky presented his book "Continuation of real walks around old Vitebsk". The new book is a sort of encyclopedia of the city of the beginning of the 20th century. The collection contains 205 articles about interesting buildings, enterprises, organizations that operated in the city on the Dvina in the first decades of the last century. The first such book "Real Walks with an Old Map" was published in a small edition in 2021 and instantly became popular among admirers of antiquity. Then it was decided to make a sequel to "Walk", but from a different angle, - says Arkady Podlipskyi. - "Real walks with an old map" included 133 city objects drawn on the plan-map of 1904. In the new edition, I decided to talk about those organizations that did not fall into the mentioned plan, to expand the time frame, to pay attention to public organizations, which were numerous in pre-revolutionary Vitebsk. What kind of societies before the unions were not in this amazing city in the year 1916!? Here, for example, is the Vitebsk branch of the All-Russian Union of Engineers or the All-Russian Union of Bandleaders, or the All-Russian Union of Cities of Aid to Martyred Soldiers, or the Vilnius Officers' Economic Society, or the Union of Owners of Canteens, Cafes, Tea Rooms, and Rooms, the Union of St. George Knights, and so on. Industrial and craft life in the city was bubbling. At that time, Vitebsk produced flax fiber, tiles, terry cloth, wax, candies, corsets, umbrellas, ropes and many other things. A local expert suggests that one of the richest people in the world, Google co-founder Sergey Brin (in 2025, he entered the top 10 (8th place) of the ranking of the richest people in the world according to Forbes magazine with a fortune of $138 billion) has a family connection with the Vitebsk Brins. Collectors, philanthropists, representatives of the intelligentsia - the family roots of whole dynasties that have done a lot for their city, the trace of some surnames is lost in Russia and even far away.
