This extensive collection of essays devoted to Comparative Literature grew out of reports and discussions delivered at the international conference 'Comparative History, Criticism and Theory of Literature in Eastern Europe and the World: Theories and Interpretations' (September 21-22, 1999, University of Latvia). The Comparative Literature studies of such scope enabled a thorough analysis of various literary aspects: the influence of folklore, Greek and Roman authors, a junction of writing and the visual arts and music. Special attention is paid to Comparative Literature as a method and examination procedure for determining the influence of world literature on the works by Eastern European authors.
