The middle of the 19th century. Enlightenment works are gaining popularity in Kyiv, and the ideas of populism are being established. Young students wear the Ukrainian scroll as a sign of their nationality, as a symbol of pride in their culture, as a protest against despotism towards the Ukrainian people. Calls for the education of the common people begin to be heard: the creation of folk schools, the publication of books in their native language. In the center of the story there are several generations of the Kyiv intelligentsia. Some are loyal supporters of the system at that time, others are ready to nurture and spread science and native culture.
