The novel is devoted to the half-historical half-mythical event that took part during the Russian tsar Ivan the Terrible's (1530-1584) ruling. Although being very cruel, Ivan IV considered the opinion of the beautiful conventual Anna Notkena, whose spirit vanquished the tyrant. The nun cured soles and bodies of her people and guarded their faith. She also predicted Latvia's future.
