The basis of the monograph is research approved in scientific conferences and publications, developed in the study of sources and contexts not studied before and supplemented with new findings and conclusions. The work is structured in three chapters, each of them focusing on a certain range of issues of literary history and theory. In the first chapter, topical issues of the theory and methodology of modern literary studies are discussed in an interdisciplinary section (national literature as a literary-scientific category; problems of translation and adaptation of the English word "gender" in the space of the Latvian language and culture). The second chapter is dedicated to the texts created under the conditions of Soviet occupation, which today have acquired the status of classical heritage. The third chapter is devoted to the great narratives in the aspect of place consciousness, focusing on the relations of identity and modernity, choosing the literary text of Piebalga and Riga as the object of reflection. The main text of the monograph is supplemented by a bibliography, an index of persons and a summary in English.
