This book, prepared by international group of historians, poses a question about civil identity in the epoch of public changes, happened in the Russian Empire in the second half of the XIXth- the beginning of the XXth centuries, when reforming and industrialization were accompanied by the erosion of class state and the appearance of new social groups (e.g. businessmen). Social differentiation, urbanization, professionalization, appearance of public opinion and pluralism became the constituents of modernization process, which gave rise to the model of activity of civil society.
