This is a collection of written works which played an important role in Bulgarian history from the 7th to the 14th century. These include: a letter from Photius the Great, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, to Boris I of Bulgaria, which contains advice on "how to govern"; letters from King Simeon I to the Byzantine official Leo Choerosphactes, which show the character and the determination of one of the greatest Bulgarian rulers; war chronicles by Symeon the Logothete, which describe fierce battles, political moves and peace talks between Bulgaria and Byzantium; and King Kaloyan's correspondence with Pope Innocent III, which was part of a diplomatic game between two of the greatest figures of their time.
