Michael Apalinarevich Buteneu was born in 1919 in Yalta, where his parents left Moscow after the revolution. He was not a year old when his family moved to Austria via Constantinople; later they moved to France, where many members of their extended family gathered. In 1934 all moved to Poland, where he remained family Shchors on the border with the Soviet Union. In Warsaw, Buteneu received matriculation.
