The affirmation of cultural change in the first half of the twentieth century is assessed and interpreted by the authors "from below", on the basis of the criteria and procedures determined by the texts under study. In particular, they take into account the progressive vector of the Slovak cultural tradition and note the many different and often contradictory contemporary ideas about the movement "forward". They attempt to look at Slovak modernizations from multiple angles and to grasp the forms of the modernization narrative, for which the often vaguely defined "change" was a central concept with mobilizing potential. The publication Change in Practice (Limits - Possibilities - Controversies) therefore offers a set of partial authorial interpretations confronting the same broadly conceived question: how was the project of modern culture realised in Slovak conditions? And also: from what artistic and ideological sources did it draw? After all, was the advent of modernity also tied to modernization projects that had emerged earlier, not only in the Slovak environment? Is it possible to look for productive non-national analogies and avoid an isolated view of individual modernising gestures?
