The anthology collects almost fifty Ukrainian short stories and novels on Jewish themes. Written over the course of half a century, from the 1880s to the 1930s, they cover several literary generations, a wide geography, and a spectrum of historical events. Revolutions, pogroms, World War I, socialist illusions, Bolshevism, the "renaissance of Ukrainian culture," Stalin's terror, and the Holodomor, behind which World War II and the Holocaust loom on the horizon — and against their backdrop, life, family, work, laughter, love, and hatred are reflected in literature.
