The Mogao Caves of Dunhuang were discovered in 1900. Dunhuang is an oasis town in Chinese Central Asia west of Chang'an (Xian), a former capital of China. It is one of the largest cultural precious deposits in China, and a priceless heritage of the world culture. Dunhuang grottos contain huge quantities of priceless paintings, sculptures, some 50,000 Buddhist scriptures, historical documents, manuscripts, textiles, wall-paintings and other art relics, thus being one of the most perfectly preserved of the world's great religious sanctuaries. The authors of the present publication narrate about the brilliant, though sad history of this sacred spot of Chinese and world culture.
