Based on a large array of archival and published sources, the book explores the reflection on ancient maps of colonisation of the Middle and Upper Irtysh lands by the Russian state. The gradual advance up the Irtysh, which began at the end of the 16th century, continued slowly during the 17th century and received
a powerful acceleration in the 1710s. The development of a new region was accompanied by its mapping.
Up to the beginning of the 18th century these were hand-drawn geographical drawings, and in the 1710s in Siberia map compilation works based on mathematical calculations were started.
The monograph consists of a series of documentary essays (chapters), each of which is devoted to one or several maps of the Irtysh region, depicting the region during a certain period of its development by Russia. All maps described in the book are presented in colour illustrations in the form of fragments that are easy to study. At the end of each essay are the texts of documents related to the story being described.
