Horace Safrin (1899–1980), a poet, satirist, playwright, actor and traveling theater director, was a tireless collector of the Jewish humor and folklore. Born in Monastyrisky, Ternopil Oblast, he grew up and lived the first half of his life in Stanislaviv (Ivano-Frankivsk), interacting with aristocrats and traveling merchants, folk comedians and professional journalists, tzaddiks and successful entrepreneurs, Ukrainians, Poles and, of course, Jews. The anecdotes, funny stories and proverbs collected by him in an anthology, published in the 1960s and 1980s, became a monument to the indomitable spirit and rich folk culture of Central European Jews, which receded into the past after the Shoah.
