One form of the Nazi policy of genocide and "scorched earth" in the occupied Soviet territory was the destruction of villages, often along with the population. The collection presented to the reader's attention contains documents telling about the Nazi crimes committed on the territory of Belarus, most of which are published for the first time. As a result of the activities carried out by the partisans, in many cases it was possible to save Belarusian villages from burning, to save the population from theft. Monstrous atrocities were committed by the Nazis in Belarus during the three years of occupation. For the period from 1941 to 1944. they burned 9200 villages and villages, 5295 of them the Nazis destroyed along with all or part of the population. In the Vitebsk region, 243 villages were burned twice, 83 - three times, 22 - four or more times.
