Losing a war can amount to a national catastrophe. The fateful summer of 1913 marked a turning point in the modern history of the Bulgarian people. The Second Balkan War (June-August 1913), which broke out when Bulgaria attacked its former allies Serbia and Greece, was bloody and tense, very short yet full of dramatic events. A total of 20,606 Bulgarian soldiers and officers died in the space of a single month, and another 50,303 were wounded. The civilian casualties were even more numerous. The country suffered severe blows from all sides and was labeled an "incorrigible aggressor".
