From its liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule in 1878 until the end of World War I in 1918, Bulgaria fit perfectly in the general international policy on opiate drugs. Opium poppy growing and opium production formed an integral part of the Bulgarian economy. After World War I and the restrictions imposed by the British Commonwealth, opiates began to be smuggled in an organized way through the black market. Until the communist takeover in 1944, Bulgaria was involved in the international network for production and illegal distribution of opium, heroin and hashish. The present study highlights the legal production of narcotic drugs, the illicit trade in such substances and its suppression by the Bulgarian authorities.
