The book analyzes the policy of industrial protectionism implemented by the Bulgarian governments from the mid-1890s until the mid-1930s. Bulgaria started to build its own industry much later than the advanced European nations. Therefore, in 1886 politician Ivan E. Geshov, then finance minister (and later prime minister), raised the issue of stepping up the country's industrial development with the support of the government. Between 1894 and 1928 the idea was fulfilled with the adoption of four laws to promote local industry. The monograph describes the attitudes of various groups, including political parties and economic organizations, towards the campaign.
