Migration from Bulgaria to Britain has a long history which began in the 19th century. The kind of UK-bound migration which has taken place since the democratic changes in Bulgaria in 1989 is very different from the migrant movements that occurred between the 19th century and World War II. Mila Maeva's study discusses mainly the new wave of migrants. It looks into the causes of the phenomenon and the immigration situation in Britain, paying particular attention to the emergence and functioning of subgroups in the receiving society. The study is devoted primarily to the Bulgarian community in England. Bulgarians in England are not a homogeneous group; they feel that there are divisions among them based on which part of Bulgaria they come from, their ethnic origin, place of settlement, age, gender, religion, language, social and employment status, occupation, skills, motivation, and even musical tastes.
