This monograph examines the system of mythological images and concepts as an integral part of the Bulgarian folk culture, worldview, psyche and identity. It was written based on a rich source of information from all of the Bulgarian ethnic territory. In order to reveal the genesis, the primary function and the semantic content of the beliefs preserved in the folk memory to the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century, parallels are made with the similar phenomena from the mythologies of other nations. It is shown that the ethnical specific is created as a result of the specific conditions under which it the Bulgarian people were developed from the peculiar interplay of beliefs and ideas of the Thracians, Slavs and Bulgars, the cultural influence of the nations with which the Bulgarians had close contact.
