Petko Hinov (born 1972) is a versatile Bulgarian translator from Old Chinese ("Dream of the Red Chamber" by Cao Xueqin, in four volumes), Modern Chinese, Old Bulgarian, Church-Slavonic, Russian, Serbian and Romanian. In "Bulgarian Ethnology and Translation", he shows how "language and words pervade every dimension of every reasonable human being". The Old Bulgarian word "iazyk" meant both "language" and "a people". Having a written language is an indispensable condition for a people to thrive through the centuries. The book also discusses the mission of a translator. A translator "is called upon to render spirituality, to render culture" - and to become a vehicle of two cultures, sometimes as different as Chinese and Bulgarian culture.
