The first edition of the present book was prepared by the officers of the Regional Gendarmery in 1899 and had become one of the best ethnographical works of the XIX - beginning of the XXth centuries. The four chapters of the present edition - "The Population of Bukovyna", "The Topographic Description of the Localities", "The History of Bukovyna" and "The Culture of Bukovyna" - are accompanied by the original text in German.
