The monograph focuses on the creation of new Roman Catholic sacral buildings in the Czech lands during the communist totalitarian rule between 1948 and 1989. In the second half of the 20th century, the devastation of sacred buildings, cemeteries and small sacred monuments, the targeted destruction of objects and the lack of interest of state authorities in their maintenance and repair remained the defining and completely prevailing tendency in our environment. In the case of efforts to build, implement and consecrate (benedictions) several chapels and churches in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, these are thus anomalies and exceptions based on specific intra-church, social and local conditions. The actual topic of the realizations is therefore preceded by setting them in the broader context of the contributions of European historiography, the situation of organized theistic religiosity and sacred architecture in selected countries of the former Eastern Bloc, the shifts associated with the Second Vatican Council as a paradigmatic change in church history, and the development of Czech church politics, especially during the Prague Spring. Numerous excursions serve to present related frameworks and contrasting narratives with similar starting conditions but unsuccessful outcome efforts. The analysis stands at the intersection of social history and church history, with a particular emphasis on microhistorical and local contexts, and uses approaches from historical scholarship and other humanities disciplines, as well as Catholic theology and especially liturgics. The book is the first more comprehensive research on the subject in the Czech environment, including a proposal for a typology of buildings.
