The events in the novel take place at the end of the 15th century in Ottoman Kafa (now Feodosiya), in the Crimea. Sultan Bayazid II sent his youngest son, Shehzade Mehmed, there as a governor to establish diplomatic relations with the Muscovites. Crimean Khan Mengli Girey took advantage of this situation. Trying to gain independence from the Ottoman sultan, he brought Shahzade Mehmed closer to him, making him his son-in-law. Soon he began to contradict his father and brought trouble on himself.
