After two devastating defeats by the German army - under Al-Alamein in Africa and under Stalingrad in the USSR - at the end of the winter of 1943, Ukrainian police units in Volyn left the service and joined the ranks of the newly formed UPA. In order to replace them, the German occupation authorities carried out another forced and voluntary mobilization among the Volyn youth. It is about these "black soldiers" that is told in the story of Alexander Yevtushko.
