The book examines the continuity between paganism and Christianity in the history of the ancient and medieval town of Sozopol, formerly Apollonia, on the Black Sea coast of present-day Bulgaria. Some little known yet significant circumstances and events shaped the place as a polis and an early Christian center, and later, as one of the most important spiritual and intellectual hubs near Constantinople whose fame reached even Italian statesman Lorenzo de' Medici. The city's religious history exhibits complex, multilayered dynamism galvanized by the opposition, overlapping and assimilation of various religious traditions over the centuries. It is also marked by religious syncretism on several levels and at several stages.
