In the 1930s, geographer Edgar Kant concluded that it was impossible to draw a dividing line between city and countryside. This book focuses on urban life in the first half of the twentieth century, briefly touching on the major changes that occurred during the early Soviet era. The first chapter talks about the history of Estonian cities, their social, economic and cultural content. The second chapter examines the differences between traditional rural craft and trading settlements and industrial settlements. The third chapter is devoted to the daily life of the villages, lifestyle, living conditions, and healthcare. The last part of the book consists of excerpts from address books in German from 1890-1910, published in Riga in 2008 and published by many provinces of Estonia and Livonia.
