The second novel by S.Sokolov (1943) is a most original work. The writer tries to escape the conventional norms of the Russian language and combines into one style the rude vernacular language, dialects, works of Russian and world classics, the elaborate style of the Holy Writ, and words invented by the author himself. The narration wanders from one narrator to the other, prose interlaces with poetry, and every word combination strikes by its unexpectedness.
