The architectural appearance of Berlin was formed under the influence of a combination of factors that Philip Oswalt brings together with the term "automatic urbanism". The city has captured the styles, ideologies, political systems and tragedies of the last century - and clothed them in architectural form. This study shows how the confrontation of ideologies, political, economic and military forces gives rise to spontaneous construction and urban planning phenomena that go beyond architecture and urbanism and have significant potential. The appearance of Berlin is also determined by the influence of other global factors (which is typical for many European megacities): the formation of conglomerates, issues of disputed borders of territories, large-scale demolitions, an imbalance of voids and dense buildings, etc. This book made a splash twenty years ago when it was published in German. It has now been translated into English for the first time. A detailed analysis of Berlin as an example of a modern city, which does not lose its relevance, destroys the ideas of heroic modernism and new nationalism. And today, 20th century Berlin is becoming an inspiration for new forms in architecture and urban planning.
