The author M. de Ivantes was born in the northeastern Bulgarian region of Dobrudzha in 1952. He became interested in the tatars who lived north of the Danube River delta. He began to study their history and traditions. Ivantes graduated from the Institute of Culture and Education in Varna, with folklore studies as his second specialty. Later, he carried out ethnographic studies among the Bulgarians in Bessarabia, a historical region shared between Moldova and Ukraine. He studied at the Institute of the Arts in Chisinau, Moldova and earned a PhD in history (ethnology) from the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Ivantes spent some time working with the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, where he was in charge of relations with Bulgarians in Moldova and Ukraine. Over the last few years, he has been living in Spain.
