The history of Sevastopol, as well as its prehistory, is closely connected with the influence of Greek culture and its representatives. The city was founded on lands that belonged to the ancient Greek Chersonesos - medieval Kherson (Korsun), where in 988 the holy equal-to-the-apostles Prince Vladimir was baptized. The Greeks made a significant contribution to the military history of the Black Sea Fleet, whose base was Sevastopol, to the development of trade and agriculture in the region. The surnames of naval officers of Greek origin were forever entrenched in the city's toponymy.
