The book, covering all the historical stages of the city's development (from its foundation to the present day), was published to the 550th anniversary of Balakhna. For centuries, Balakhna was known for its salt mines, tiles, and lace; barges were built here, and, according to legend, the national hero Kuzma Minin was born here. In Balakhna, you can also find the most ancient stone temple of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese: the church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. During the Soviet period, the city became famous for its hydroelectric power plant, which was one of the first in the country, as well as for being the largest boom plant in the USSR.
