Ustafa Kemal Ataturk was not a well-known leader worldwide when he started the national resistance movement in Anatolia in 1919. However, the government's efforts to create and protect Ataturk's public image turned him into an almost superhuman figure in the eyes of many. Cinema played an important role in creating and disseminating this image and contributed to Ataturk's project of building a modern nation-state. In contrast, there is almost no research analyzing Ataturk's images in films and the effects of these images on the political and cultural life of early Republican Turkey.
