In more than a hundred years since the publication of the book by Professor Fedor Shmit (1877-1937), an academician of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in the Department of World Art, little has changed in Ukrainian art science. The work, published in Kharkiv in March 1919, remains relevant and remains mandatory for those eager to master the theory of world visual culture and architecture. The treatise presents the concept of the formation of art in the scope of its ontological manifestations: from the morphology of the production of the work to the sociology of its functioning and subtleties of the psychology of perception. The theory of progressive cyclical development of art presented in the book is a reflection of theoretical considerations based on the facts of the history of art, not the history of artists. In the course of studying the selected five components of fine art (rhythm, form, movement, space, light), the author visualizes the nature and essence of artistic works on the basis of six styles of painting (irrealism, idealism, naturalism, realism, illusionism, impressionism), teaches that how they should be perceived; if not to perceive - how to behave. The architectural forms of the wooden churches of the Ukrainian Carpathians (mostly of the Boykov type) are subjected to a comparative and theoretical analysis. Fedir Shmit's treatise is interesting not only to specialists - the text explains what art is, how the viewer (amateur, student) should behave when communicating with a visual work, how must cultivate an intelligent eye in order to contemplate art not only emotio, but also more or less ratio.
