Plamen V. Petrov's study has already won the acclaim of the scientific community as he successfully defended it as his dissertation. Now, in the form of a monograph, it will reach a wide readership. From 1967 to 1981, Bulgarian culture was marked particularly strongly by the cultural congresses organized by its communist leaders, Petrov says. The end of the 1960s was a dynamic period when repressions alternated with a softer approach. The government's grip eased in the 1970s. The study draws on over 460 sources from the Central State Archive, the Secret Records Commission, the National Library, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and cultural institutions as well as diaries, memoirs and over 900 monographs in various languages.
