The book's protagonist - Army Commander of Air Forces Alksnis, the man with the exceptional managerial abilities - worked out personnel training programs, formed new aviation crews and detachments that helped to bring Soviet aviation up to high standards. Later he was subjected to repressions and shot, his wife spent 15 years in forced labour camps.
