With the trilogy “Arduous Years” the young Dimitur Talev (1898 – 1966, one of the prominent classical Bulgarian writers) made a try to realize his inner conviction that “something big must be written about Macedonia”. The Ilinden-Preobrazhenie uprising which lighted with its fires his childhood did not give him a peace. Along with that the idea that this event must be presented in broader flamboyant image was in his head. This is how the epic novel narrative the – trilogy “Arduous Years” was born – a courageous attempt of the young author to reveal the preparation, the culmination and the defeat of the uprising.
