The book is more than just a guidebook or a collection of scenic routes through the lesser-known parts of the region. It’s also an invitation to adventure—one that the author encourages readers to undertake after finishing the book.
Mitya Mozgovoy, a theater producer and festival organizer by profession, has visited Kazan many times. Before evening performances, he would set off by car to explore remote districts of Tatarstan, where abandoned Orthodox churches still stand. These travel notes became the foundation and emotional core of this book. The second part of the edition includes academic commentary on these neglected religious structures, provided by Alexey Yakovlev, a researcher at the Department of Architectural and Monumental Heritage of the State Institute for Art Studies. This department carries out essential work documenting architectural landmarks across Russia. As a result, the book functions both as a practical travel guide and a historical-architectural resource. Within its pages are six diverse itineraries through different parts of Tatarstan. Author: Mitya Mozgovoy is a producer, art director of theater festivals and events, and Deputy Chairman of the Russian Union of Theatre Workers.
